- Call for applications -
Energy Transition: Expansion and Integration of Renewable Energy
Background
Young experts and professionals from all over the world are convened for the 9th edition of the international Summer Academy; an interdisciplinary program that bridges the gap between academic solutions and practical problems in its area of expertise: “Energy and the Environment”. The Summer Academy aims to act as an interdisciplinary and intergenerational forum for highly qualified young researchers working on energy and/or environment issues. This gives the new generation of researchers and practitioners access to valuable experience and insights by connecting them with one another and with experienced professionals. By incorporating professionals from the business sector, the event creates a much-needed link between research and industry, both sides are able to learn from and influence each other in a mutually beneficial manner: ensuring the relevance of research carried out and practice based on the latest findings. After all, the value of scientific findings and policy solutions ultimately lies in their practical application.
Each year, the event addresses a topical issue in the field of energy and the environment. This year the focus lies on the challenges surrounding the evolution of energy supply, moving from a traditional, fossil-fuel based energy system to one based on renewable sources. Researchers and professionals alike will gain access to the latest information and interdisciplinary findings on policy issues, economic hurdles and legal frameworks pertinent to the integration of renewables and to energy efficiency. This year’s topic - Energy Transition
Climate change, security concerns and the depletion of traditional energy sources are forcing us to change our energy behavior and move to a more sustainable consumption model. The shift from currently dominating fossil fuels to renewable alternatives brings about political, economic and technological challenges that exceed national borders and disciplinary boundaries. This reality is increasingly reflected in policy on an international as well as a local level, and is driving all countries (though each at their own pace) to curtail emissions and encourage the development of clean technologies. The Summer Academy 2012 is dedicated to this topic, and will focus on the challenges surrounding the evolution of energy supply, moving from a traditional, fossil-fuel based energy system to one based on renewable sources. Researchers and professionals alike will gain access to the latest information and interdisciplinary findings on policy issues, economic hurdles and legal frameworks pertinent to the integration of renewables and to energy efficiency. Agenda
The international Summer Academy 2012 - Energy Transition: Expansion and Integration of Renewable Energy Sources - will take place in Greifswald and in Berlin from July 21-28. The program will start on Saturday the 21st in the charming coastal town of Greifswald with an introductory workshop as well as a visit of the nuclear power station Lubmin, before closure the largest nuclear plant in East Germany . The program will be complemented with leisure activities. On Monday the 23rd the Academy will move to Berlin, where the applied environmental research institute IKEM (Institute for Climate protection, Energy & Mobility) has set up a comprehensive 5-day program of seminars and lectures on contemporary challenges surrounding renewable energy expansion and integration, from energy storage to grid issues. Monday Current state and prognosis of RES: an international and comparative analysis
Tuesday Legal and policy frameworks on RES, their effectiveness and future developments
Wednesday New/high potential energy technologies: energy storage (power-to-gas) and energy efficiency
Thursday Energy grids: expansion and reinforcement challenges to further RES integration
Friday Grand closing conference in Berlin
Generation, Storage and Integration: RES in the Baltic Sea
region The Baltic Sea region offers a unique combination of abundant natural resources, diversity in cultures and policy and a vast potential for further RES development. Acquired knowledge and experience over the past week will turn to practical application as experts from the region will shed light on the current state of RES, likely developments, and what the major challenges and delays in the process are. Special attention will be paid to the technical, economic and legal challenges facing the offshore wind industry. The end of the Academy will be marked with a convivial evening program in Berlin with the participants and the teaching faculty. Applications
Participation is open to all researchers and practitioners with a university degree and/or significant work experience in energy and environmental policies. Please fill in the attached application form and send it back to us by April 27th, 2012. Late applications will only be considered subject to availability of places.
